49 CFR 396.11, 396.13
At the end of each day's work the driver must report in writing any defect or deficiency discovered in the parts and accessories listed in 396.11 that would affect safe operation or result in a mechanical breakdown. Since 2014, property carriers do NOT need a report when no defect is found - only when there is one. The carrier must repair the defect before the vehicle is operated again and the driver must review the last report before driving (396.13). Keep every report and its repair certification for three months.
