Periodic (Annual) Inspection Record and Inspector Qualification

49 CFR 396.17, 396.19, 396.21, Appendix A to Part 396

Every commercial motor vehicle, including each trailer, must pass an inspection covering every item in Appendix A to Part 396 at least once every 12 months. The carrier keeps the inspection report for 14 months and the vehicle carries proof (a copy of the report or a decal) at all times. The inspector must be qualified under 396.19 and the carrier keeps evidence of the qualification for one year after the inspector leaves. A missing periodic inspection on most of the fleet (51 percent or more of the vehicles examined) is an automatic audit failure.
